Internet Providers in Japan
Some friends were looking for Internet Providers so I updated a survey I first did back in 1995 and a followup in 1995. It’s not all inclusive (there’s a LOT of ISP’s in Japan now) and it just gives costs of basic services like dial-up access, but it should give a rough comparison of some of the main providers I know of.

ADSL Providers
The following list shows some of the Internet providers in Japan that provide ADSL access.
The costs shown are for router access. Router access allows you to connect 2 or more PCs (or Macs) to your connection. USB connections are also available for slightly cheaper, but these can be connected to only one computer (however you may be able to use connection sharing to connect more PCs if you have them networked).
Most providers offer selection of different services which may increase or reduce the costs shown below. Check each providers service pages carefully to see what’s included in each package. Some charge extra for homepage space and other features.

NTT ADSL Line Usage fees
In most cases, NTT also charge an additional fee on top of the providers charges to enable ADSL on your phone line
- Type 1 (line shared with telephone): \187
- Type 2 (line dedicated for ADSL): \2,062
- NTT ADL line ordering fee: \800
Type 1 connections are where you share the ADSL line with your telephone connection.
Type 2 is when you get a separate line for your telephone, or keep your ISDN line in addition to the ADSL line.

Virtual Hosting
If you want your web pages to be located at www.yourdomain.com, you’ll need a virtual hosting account. These tend to be more expensive, and the cost depends on the size of your site and the amount of traffic it produces. The following table lists sample rates of basic virtual hosting costs from a number of providers. They all have a selection of services with various options and limits.
Some options that might be worth paying extra for are FTP access, Telnet access, cgi scripts, Frontpage Server extensions, and if you’re thinking of starting an e-commerce site, you’ll more than likely need SSL Secure Server and SQL Database Server.

Website Providers
If you don’t care what address your web pages are at, there are a number of free web page providers such as Geocities, Yahoo, MSN and 50Megs, to name but a few.
